Scooping obi (flowing water with chrysanthemums and flowers)

This formal obi is made with luxurious gold thread. It is a masterpiece that takes about 40 days to make using a hand loom instead of a loom.

In scooping weaving (also called 'Sukuiori'), the weft thread is used to 'scoop up' the warp threads hung on the loom to create a pattern. It is a technique similar to Tsuzure weaving, and does not use pattern paper. Instead, the weaver checks the sketch and scoops up each thread as if drawing a picture, weaving it in. For this reason, even if the same sketch and weaver are used, the exact same thing cannot be woven twice.
